CPAP & Bi-Level Machines

Carolina's Home Medical Equipment offers a wide variety of options to improve your quality of sleep.  Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) units are electrical devices that use a motor and a blower to maintain a flow of air that provides pressure to your airways, preventing them from collapsing.  By keeping your airways open you can breathe uninterrupted during sleep.  CPAP machines are the most common and non-invasive treatment for sleep apnea and require a doctor's order before use.

What is Sleep Apnea?

The Greek word "apnea" literally means "without breath." People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. With each apnea event, the brain briefly arouses people with sleep apnea in order for them to resume breathing, but consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality.

Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated.

Signs of Sleep Apnea?

Patient Symptoms:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, which is falling asleep when you normally should not, such as while you are eating, talking, or driving.
  • Feeling unrefreshed after sleep, having problems with memory and concentration, feeling tired, and experiencing personality changes.
  • Morning or night headaches.
  • Nocturia, which is the need to frequently get up during the night in order to urinate.

Others may notice:

  • Episodes of not breathing (apnea), which may occur as few as 5 times an hour (mild apnea) to more than 50 times an hour (severe apnea).
  • Loud snoring. Almost all people who have sleep apnea snore, but not all people who snore have sleep apnea.
  • Restless tossing and turning during sleep.
  • Nighttime choking or gasping spells.

How does a CPAP Device Help with Sleep Apnea?

To explain exactly how a CPAP device works, it is important to remember that during an apneic episode, the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses, blocking the airway. In order to keep the airway open, a CPAP device gently blows air into the airway, keeping it open. This air is delivered via a small, bedside machine attached to a mask that should be worn all night.  Today's CPAP's offer comfort modes such as EPR (expiratory pressure relief), which eases the work of breathing against the machine.  Carolina's Home Medical Equipment has a licensed professional on staff to ensure you will be fitted properly.

Once we have received your doctor's order we will:

  • review any questions about using the Sleep Device
  • do a full instruction and review of the Use/Care-cleaning/Replacement of supplies
  • get you fitted with the proper mask as we have a large selection of styles available
  • have a 4 week follow up, then will follow up every 3 months

CPAP & Bi-Level Machines - Respironics

Flex Family Technologies - The REMstar Pro Features C-FLEX and C-FLEX+
Respironics natural and clinically-proven "flex" technologies enhance traditional pressure therapy to improve comfort and increase compliance. Thanks to the advanced Digital Auto-Trak algorithm that detects the onset of inspiration and exhalation, the REMstar Plus delivers just the right pressure relief for every breath, making it easier for patients to adapt to therapy.

System One Humidity Control with Dry Box Technology
Many CPAP/APAP users find that the addition of heated humidity to their sleep therapy system improves comfort and helps with overall compliance. The optional System One Heated Humidifier delivers optimum humidity, drastically reduces rainout, and provides ultimate comfort throughout the night by analyzing and adjusting to ambient temperature, changing environmental conditions, relative humidity, and therapy flow. Revolutionary Dry Box technology isolates the humidfier's water source from the inner workings of the device to protect against water damage.

System One Resistance Control
System One Resistance Control achieves complete system comfort by enabling the device and mask to work optimally together. Through simple settings, the System One Resistance Control instructs your CPAP to compensate for variable resistance characteristics related to different masks. The result is synchronous pressure delivery and the assurance you can enjoy the full benefits of Respironics Flex comfort technologies no matter which mask is used.

Advanced Event Detection & Reporting
The System One REMstar PRO tracks many common OSA related events including Hypopneas, Flow Limitation, Respiratory Effort Related Arousal, Snores, and Leaks. In addition the REMstar PRO can detect many symptoms beyond classic OSA -- such as clear airway apneas and periodic breathing -- that may indicate the need for specialized therapy.

We stock a variety of CPAP supplies including the following manufacturers:

  • ResMed
  • Respironics
  • Invacare
  • Fisher & Paykel

Feel free to stop by our store in Matthews, NC.  We can ship CPAP supplies directly to you in the United States, including Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas.

Medicare and Insurance guidelines suggest your CPAP supplies should be replenished at the following frequencies:

  • Mask:  1 every 3 months (you should always keep a spare mask)
  • Nasal Cushions:  2 per month  (should be changed due to flap degradation and loss of mask seal.  Facial oils break down the integrity of the flap (outer seal) and you will notice you need to make the mask tighter to seal, leading to uncomfortable fitting.)
  • Full Face Cushions:  1 per month  (should be changed due to flap degradation and loss of mask seal.  Facial oils break down the integrity of the flap (outer seal) and you will notice you need to make the mask tighter to seal, leading to uncomfortable fitting.)

  • Disposable Filters:  2 per month  (the machine needs to pull in fresh air to run properly)
  • Reusable Filters:  1 every 6 months
  • Tubing:  1 every 3 months (should be changed due to the possibility of bacteria build up in long lengths of tubing)
  • Chinstrap:  1 every 6 months
